Product Description:

In recent years, gap junction research in the cardiovascular system has considerably improved the understanding of cardiac function and the vasculature in health and disease. The present book focuses on the communication of intercellular gap junctions in the cardiovascular system but also includes aspects of physiology, medicine and cell biology. The first part of this volume highlights the principal aspects of these intercellular channels, allowing the readers unfamiliar with the field to get a deeper understanding of the physiology, pharmacology and regulation of gap junctions. The second part elucidates their role in the pathophysiology of important cardiovascular diseases, e.g. arrhythmia, heart failure, ischemia, atrial fibrillation, diabetes and arteriosclerosis. This book is of special interest to cardiologists, physiologists, pharmacologists, cardiovascular scientists, biophysicists, cell biologists as well as to industrial companies engaged in cardiovascular medicine and research.

Handbook of Chronic Total Occlusions

By George Dangas, Roxana Mehran, Moses Jeffrey, Martin B. Leon

Publisher: Informa Healthcare
Number Of Pages: 256
Publication Date: 2007-08-22
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1841846244
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781841846248
Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:

Chronic total occlusions (CTO) are common, and found in approximately one third of patients with significant coronary artery disease who undergo angiography. CTO constitute one of the main criteria when selecting between angioplasty and bypass surgery. Angioplasty for CTO is intricate, requires excellent operator skill, but is also plagued by a reduced success rather when compared to non-total occlusions. The main problem with CTO is not the type of st3ent to use but rather the possibility to cross the occlusion and advance the wire into the true lumen of the distal vessel. Having accomplished this, the rates of restenosis are prohibitively high. Mehran, Dangas and an internationally team of experienced operators offer the reader sound advice on the evaluation and management of CTO in both the coronary and peripheral vascular systems. Their practical guidance should aid all those working with this difficult subset of patients.
