Advances in the Management of Gastric Cancer

By:John S. Macdonald, MD, FACP

  • Publisher: CMPMedica
  • Number Of Pages: 97
  • Publication Date: 2006
  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9781891483431
  • Binding: Paperback

Product Description:
Gastric cancer remains a challenging problem in oncology. This book is
designed to provide an updated summary of the current status of gastric
cancer diagnosis and management and to show what the future possibilities
in the management of stomach cancer might be. In their chapters, Dr.
Hundahl provides an update on the role of surgery in gastric cancer,
emphasizing that it is now possible to tailor surgical approaches to individual
patients; Drs. Chua and Cunningham provide important information
documenting the recently demonstrated benefits of perioperative
chemotherapy in improving the outcome of patients with gastric cancer;
Drs. Mahtani and Waltzman discuss the important gains in cure rates
resulting from the use of post-gastrectomy chemoradiation, which has
made this approach a standard of care in the view of many clinicians; Dr.
Mitchell reviews the current status of cytotoxic chemotherapy in stomach
cancer, emphasizing the many chemotherapeutic options available and the
reasoning that clinicians use in choosing the right treatment option for the
right patient; and Drs. Shah and Ilson share their views of the future directions
that will be pursued in the management of this disease. These experienced
clinicians provide a critical analysis of the roles of targeted therapies
for patients with stomach cancer.
Although it is clear that in the past several decades some strides have
been made in improving outcomes in gastric cancer, it is still a fact that too
many patients diagnosed with gastric cancer will succumb to their disease.
It is hoped that this book, which reviews the most recent management
strategies and provides an informed glimpse of what the future approaches
might be, will leave clinicians with a sense of optimism for what they may
do now for their patients and what progress the future will undoubtedly
hold.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

By R. Luchetti, P. Amadio

  • Publisher: Springer
  • Number Of Pages: 432
  • Publication Date: 2006-11-20
  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540223878
  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540223870
  • Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, with its surgical profile, is a must for those specialising in this condition (hand surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, physiatrists and hand physical therapists), for both experts and newcomers to this field. For the young surgeon just starting out, the book explains the technical modalities of surgical treatment for this condition and describes alternative non-surgical procedures. It also depicts the complications that can arise in treatment. For more experienced surgeons, this book is an instrument for deepening their knowledge of this condition and its management. It can be considered a moment for reflection on a condition that is erroneously considered simple to treat and easy to resolve. The surgical chapters compare various complications as well as various conservative and rehabilitative treatment options, thus underlining that this condition must not be underestimated. Incorrect treatment can have many negative ramifications: not only that the patient is dissatisfied but it can also lead to the hand’s functional loss and render the patient an invalid. This book is also intended for all physicians and medical students interested in this subject, presenting the broad range of problems caused by this condition and how best to manage them.

Living with Cancer

  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 081353819X

  • Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:

"This book represents something that I have long wished I could give not only to my patients and their families, but also to my own family, friends, and neighbors. It . . . provides a solid foundation upon which one can build an understanding of what might be needed to deal with cancer."—from the Foreword "Every 22 seconds, 24/7, another American is found to have one of cancer's more life-threatening forms. Ideally, each of those diagnoses should be accompanied by the distribution of a copy of Dave Visel's Living with Cancer."—Daniel J. Lieber, M.D., oncology and hematology, the Angeles Clinic and Research Center, and USC School of Medicine. "The possibility that this book could be available for oncologists and radiologists to hand to patients at the time of diagnosis is very appealing. We could help save an enormous amount of pain and financial loss."—Kenneth C. Anderson, M.D., Kraft Family Professor of Medicine, Dana-Farber Cancer Center "Living with Cancer presents a road map that has been needed for years and should be required reading for those that seek an active role in their treatment for this dreaded disease."— David C. Pulsifer, retired president, BD Healthcare Consulting (added October 26 - after catalog went to press) You've got cancer. Now what? It is one among the myriad of daunting questions that the more than 1.3 million Americans who are diagnosed with invasive cancer each year find themselves asking. There is, of course, no simple answer. Cancer does not come with a set of instructions and most people have no real idea of what lies ahead. There are, however, certain things that all individuals affected by the disease can do to help navigate their way though this life-altering ordeal.

As treatment options continue to improve, cancer has ceased to be the definitive death-sentence that it once was. While it remains an extremely serious and potentially fatal disease, today more and more people are surviving their diagnosis—at last count, 10 million in the United States alone. With these staggering numbers, it has become all the more critical that patients and their loved ones learn not how to prepare for death, but rather how to live with the reality of cancer.

In this essential, candidly-written guide, Dave Visel draws on expertise hard-won during his wife's battle with lymphoma. He provides an overview of the varieties of cancer as well as patients' perspectives on all the basic types of treatments available, from surgery and radiation to chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant. Chapters dispel common myths and fears associated with these treatments as well as provide tips on nutrition and physical fitness.

Living with Cancer, however, is not a medical text. Recognizing that the disease not only changes us physically, but has tentacles that affect nearly every aspect of our lives, Visel moves beyond the hospital to provide information and strategies to help with the emotional, practical, and financial effects of a diagnosis. Cancer patients and their partners and family will find the tools they need to make sensible, well-informed decisions on questions ranging from the right time to tell coworkers to whether to travel for treatment. Because medical bankruptcies affect nearly 2 million American each year, Visel devotes several chapters to financial issues, including needs forecasting, creating budgets, applying for grants or aid, and negotiating with insurance companies. Relationship issues, such as how to deal with a difficult parent or whether to reconcile with an estranged spouse, are also addressed.

Breaking down the confusing variety of information and advice that cancer patients face from seemingly every direction, Living with Cancer provides an organized and comprehensive overview of the most useful corporate, government, and non-profit resources available. Anyone looking for help in understanding the full range of personal, professional, and legal issues associated with cancer will welcome this book. As inspiring as it is informative, it is a survival guide in the truest sense.

Book Description:

Galen's treatises on the classification and causation of diseases and symptoms are an important component of his prodigious oeuvre, forming a bridge between his theoretical works and his practical, clinical writings. As such, they remained an integral component of the medical teaching curriculum well into the second millennium. In these four treatises (only one of which has been previously translated into English), Galen not only provides a framework for the exhaustive classification of diseases and their symptoms as a prelude to his analysis of their causation, but he also attempts to establish precise definitions of all the key terms involved. Unlike other of his works, these treatises are notably moderate in tone, taking into account different views on structure and causation in a relatively even-handed way. Nonetheless, they are a clear statement of the Dogmatic position on the theoretical foundations of medicine in his time.

Book Description:

Over the last few decades the outcome of facial plastic surgery (facelifts) has improved dramatically and has also had an increasing impact on the quality of life for the aging population. Younger patients have also recently expressed interest in individual beautification of their features. This authoritative reference book assembles the experience of an international faculty of authors, each of whom has performed several thousand facelifts, i.e. procedures to rejuvenate and harmonize the human face. All procedures in this regard are covered and the text is accompanied by extensive artwork and photographs. The authors share their experience, including tips and tricks, as well as ways to avoid complications and pitfalls. Special emphasis is given to the concept of looking at the face as a mosaic, i.e. treating its individual parts in a harmonic way and maintaining mimic units. Combining different methods, it is possible to improve the overall outcome and diminish the aggressiveness of singular procedures, which results in fewer risks and fewer complications. The book is aimed at plastic surgeons beginning to perform facial plastic surgery as well as experienced surgeons, who will benefit from the vast and profound experience of the contributing authors. A kaleidoscope of 363 important aspects, tips and tricks in facial plastic surgery rounds up the presentation. The included DVD further enhances the practical value of the book with videos of procedures performed by the editor.

This extensively revised edition features new full-color photographs of clinical conditions and updated embryo images/photographs created using newer technologies. It also features new online USMLE-style review questions through Connection / The Point. A new introduction chapter on development includes molecular biology. This edition's larger page size improves readability. A bound-in CD-ROM, Simbryo, presents animations of embryologic system development.

Review:
Buy it for Simbryo and as a reference
This book is our text for Embryo. You can learn just using it, I guess, but only if you don't place much value on your time. You are much better getting a copy of lippincott BRS embryo, reading that to understand the concepts, using the included Simbryo CD to reinforce them (Simbryo is excellent!), then reading Langman for detail/additional reinforcement. The book is terse and poorly organized, but it provides good detail that you probably won't get elsewhere. Use it, but don't expect to learn from it efficiently unless it's augmented by a detailed lecture or some other material.
