The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke

Overview

An estimated 17 million people die of CVDs, particularly heart attacks and strokes, every year. A substantial number of these deaths can be attributed to tobacco smoking, which increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease 2–3 fold. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are other main risk factors which increase individual risks to cardiovascular diseases. One of the strategies to respond to the challenges to population health and well being due to the global epidemic of heart attack and stroke is to provide actionable information for development and implementation of appropriate policies. As part of such efforts, WHO in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has produced for the wider audience, "The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke".

The atlas addresses the global epidemic of heart disease and stroke in a clear and accessible format. This highly valuable reference material has been designed for use by policy makers, national and international organizations, health professionals and the general public. This picturesque atlas is in six parts: cardiovascular disease; risk factors; the burden; action; the future and the past; and world tables.

All topics of contemporary importance have been addressed in this atlas in succinctly summarized format such that the points are powerfully communicated in not many words on a few pages.

Review
"This is a thoughtful book, particularly strong on the correct physiological explanation of physical signs. I have always found Jules Constant's book to be my first (and only) reference regarding physical signs, and it is a great pleasure to see this updated version. Given the breadth of coverage it is surprisingly short and readable, and highly recommended." -Cardiology News

Book Description
In this significantly enhanced second edition, Jules Constant, MD, helps physicians to perfect the fine art of history-taking and physical examination as corrective strategy to the sometimes false positives and negatives produced by advanced medical technologies in the diagnosis of cardiac disease. Moving beyond total reliance on laboratory data to the expert evaluation of personal patient data, Dr. Constant summarizes forty years of clinical experience with a proven list of time-tested questions designed to elicit the crucial nuances of cardiac-related symptoms, and then provides a complete differential diagnosis for each demonstrated symptom. His method includes numerous practical tips for obtaining cardiac clues from physical appearance, measuring arterial and jugular pulses and pressures, and using a stethoscope. The heart of the book is an extensive discussion of the art and science of diagramming and grading heart sounds and murmurs, ranging from S1 through S4 to ejection, systolic regurgitant, diastolic, and abdominalal murmurs. A invaluable, stand-alone compact disc offering a seventy-minute course in auscultation, complete with heartsound illustrations taken from actual patients over the course of thirty years, clearly demonstrates and explains the sounds and murmurs discussed.

From the reviews:

"This multi-author book was written to highlight the current clinical indications and applications of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. There are 18 chapters, all composed in a standard, easily digested format . superbly produced and copiously illustrated with beautifully reproduced images and comprehensive, up-to-date references. As if all this is not enough, the authors have provided an interactive CD-ROM . the best illustrated, most comprehensive text on cardiac MRI available today and an essential guide ." (Dr. C M Turnbull, RAD Magazine, May, 2005)

"This multiauthored textbook highlights the clinical indications and applications of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The book is divided into 18 sections, providing an exhaustive review of the fundamentals of MR physics and contrast agents, image acquisition and processing, cardiac anatomy and physiology. The text is informative and well organized. The image quality is consistently outstanding . A CD-ROM is also included, containing 50 teaching cases . this textbook can be highly recommended to all cardiologists and radiologists ." (A. Manrique, Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, Vol. 27 (6), 2005)

Book Description

MRI has become the preferred noninvasive imaging modality for the heart and great vessels. The substantial technological progress achieved in recent years has provided the user with state-of-the-art MRI systems, but their optimal use can be limited by restricted awareness of the potential patient benefit and the necessity for teaching. This extensively illustrated volume, together with the accompanying CD-ROM, has been specifically compiled to meet these needs. Essential theoretical background information is provided, and imaging acquisition and potential pitfalls are considered in detail. Most importantly, structured guidelines are provided on the interpretation of clinical data in the wide range of cardiac pathology that can be encountered. Throughout, the emphasis is on the implementation of cardiac MRI in clinical practice.
