Book Description

This book is written for anyone considering a career in medicine. The majority of these will be fifth and sixth formers, aged between 16-18, but there are also a significant number of graduands considering entry to medicine as mature students. Although primarily aimed at the UK market, 20% of those applying to UK medical schools are from overseas, and this book is equally applicable to this group.

Over 12,000 people apply to medical school every year but many more consider medicine as a career before deciding on a different subject.
This book can be marketed towards both of these groups. Those who have already decided to study medicine at university will also benefit from this book as it informs about how to choose a medical school, the application procedure, and medical school interviews.

There is currently a drive to recruit more doctors, and hence to educate more doctors. The NHS will require significantly more staff in forthcoming years, as doctors’ hours are restricted under new European working time directives and the national demands on healthcare increase. More medical schools are opening and the number of medical students is increasing (17% increase between 1996 and 2000).

This book will continue to be useful throughout medical school and junior doctor life as it covers such topics as intercalated degrees, electives, career paths, life as a doctor and working abroad.

Synopsis

An up to date book for anyone considering a medical career, and for those in medical school. It covers both getting in and how to shape your career once you are there. The authors themselves are recent graduates from medical school, but have enough experience of being doctors to write about what it is like after qualification. The book will be user friendly, with bullet points and personal experience vignettes written by people in different disciplines. The changing structure of the NHS, as well as changes in teaching methods will be addressed.
